Energy

Sumber Energi Masyarakat Lokal Maratua

Only 37% of Maratua People Served with Electricity

Based on data from the Department of Mining and Energy East Kalimantan in 2010, the electricity ratio in Maratua District is only 37%. This means that 63% of people in Maratua do not have access to electricity. Threfore, In connection with the huge potential of solar energy, the construction of Solar Power Plant (PLTS) is very appropriate and urgent in Maratua.

Beside for energy generation, solar power plant has many advantages such as: clean energy, environmental friendly, renewable energy, everlasting. Moreover, solar panels have a long life/long-term investment, it is suitable for tropical climates such as Indonesia, easy to install and operated, durable, weather resistant and robust. Comparing to the generator set (genset), diesel-fuel has price Rp. 9000,- per bottle which need at least 7 bottles for 6 hours. Additionally, the diesel fuel produce C02 and CO which cause air pollution.

Environmental Protection Fund (EPF)

Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) is a source of funding for projects that protect the environment and enhance communities. These projects are usually large projects that purchase land or construct facilities. Most projects that receive grants of EPF combine it with other funding sources.

Some examples of projects using EPF are:

  • Restoring historic sites
  • Conserving farmland
  • Restoring habitat
  • Controlling invasive species
  • Upgrading municipal sewage treatment plants
  • Cleaning up waterfront property and creating a public park
  • Helping business develop ways to recycle material

Ocean Zonation

The oceanic zone begins in the area offshore where the water measures 200 metres deep or deeper. It is the region of open sea beyond the edge of the continental shelf. The oceanic zone has a wide array of undersea terrain, including crevices that are often deeper than Mount Everest's tall, as well as deep-sea volcanoes and ocean basins. While it is often difficult for life to sustain itself in this type of environment, some species do thrive in the oceanic zone (Col).

The ocean can be divided into many zones. The ocean bottom is the benthic zone and the water itself is the pelagic zone. The neritic zone is that part of the pelagic zone that extends from the high tide line to an ocean bottom less than 600 feet deep. Water deeper than 600 feet is called the oceanic zone, which itself is divided on the basis of water depth into the epipelagic, mesopelagic, and bathypelagic zones.

These zones roughly correspond to the three other zones divided on the basis of the amount of sunlight they receive. In the sunlight zone, enough light penetrates to support photosynthesis. Below that lies the twilight zone, where very small amounts of light penetrate. Ninety percent of the space in the ocean lies in the midnight zone, which is entirely devoid of light.

Digital Island

Digital Island is very important concept to be applied in Maratua. It will provide facilities for the local community.

Information technology acts as soft-infrastructure, which can replace the function of hard-infrastructure which is much more expensive and longer to build.

This research activity is also carried out by SIDI so that the island development runs properly and the people and also tourists will be easier to get information acces optimally.

Moringa Oleivera

Moringa tree is one of the most remark- able plant ever discovered. This may sound sensational, however the fact is scientifically proven that Moringa is a source of nutrition more than ordinary plant constituent. Moringa is believed to have the potential for solving malnutrition problem and to prevent and cure various diseases around the world. Moringa is truly a magical plants as a source of nutrition and healing medicine for mankind.
Jn 1999, Fuglie LJ was the first to publish research results that was surprising the world on the nutrient content of Moringa in the book "The Miracle Tree: Moringaoleifera: Natural

Nutrition for the Tropics" (Church World Service, Dakar. 68 pp.). The book inspired further scientific research on Moringa, and then it was revised in 2001 and published back with the title "The Miracle Tree: The Multiple Attributes of Moringa".

Poteran Fertile Soil Suits for Moringa Agro-Industry

According to the research results of Fuglie LJ, Moringa leaf contains vitamin A, vitamin C, Vitamin 8, calcium, potassium, iron, and protein, and it is very easily digested and assimilated by the human body. In fact, the amount of nutrient in Moringa is more rich than common several food sources which has been used to improve malnutrition in the world. Moreover, Moringa is known containing more than 40 antioxidants and 539 known compounds as a traditional remedy for African and Indian to prevent more than 300 diseases.

Dr. Gary Bracey, an author, entrepreneur, motivator and health professional in Africa, publishing in moringadirect.com, that Moringa leaf powder contains:

  • 15 times the potassium contained in bananas
  • 10 times the vitamin A contained in carrots
  • 4 times the Beta Carotene contained in carrots
  • 25 times the Iron contained in spinach
  • Calcium 17 times and 2 times the protein contained in milk
  • 9 times the protein contained in yogurt
  • 6 times the zinc contained in almonds
  • 5 times the Fibre (Dietary Fiber) contained in vegetables in general
  • 6 times Amino Acids contained in garlic
  • 100 times the GABA (gamma- aminobutyric acid) contained in brown rice
  • 2 times Phenol Poly contained in Red Wine
  • 50 times the Vitamin 82 is contained in Sardines
  • 50 times the Vitamin 83 is contained in the Beans
  • 4 times the vitamin E contained in Corn Oil
  • 4 times the Vitamin B1 is contained in pork

In 2006, Wiley lnterScience published an article titled "Moringaoleifera: A Food Plant with Multiple Medicinal Uses". The article is a review of all parts of Moringa that can be used as remedy, since the various parts of the Moringa plant contains essential minerals and a good source of protein, vitamins, beta-carotene, amino acids, various phenolicsand essential amino acids. Moringa provides a rich and unique combination of zeatin, quercetin, beta-sitosterol, caffeoylquinic acid and kaempferol. Further, grounded moringa plant is can be an effective water purifier material. Moreover, moringa is also very important natural treatment. Various parts of the Moringa plants such as leaves, roots, seeds, bark, fruit, flowers and pods, acts as a cardiac stimulant and blood circulation. It has anti-tumor, anti-pvretlc, anti-epileptic, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, anti-hypertensive, anti-cholesterol, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, hepatoprotective activity, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Moringa is currently being studied for use in the treatment of different diseases in the medical system, particularly in South Asia.

As already mentioned above the focus of SIDI program in Poteranisland is to devote the research and development in Moringaas tropical herb that can be used for all kind purposes like medical products, nutrition and cosmetics.

Seaweed

Poteran Island has a fairly extensive coastal areas with abundant potential resources.

Seaweed, mostly Eucheuma cottoni sp. is the one of the many aquatic plants cultivated by the local people in Poteran Island that have great prospects for increasing local prosperity. Currently,Sumenep including Poteran Island is the largest seaweed producer in Indonesia with production reaching 57,056 tons.

E.Cottonii seaweed besides having resistance to disease, it's also contains high content of kappa carrageenan about 50%, based on the dry weight. Kappa carrageenan is a group of sulphonated saccharide seaweed which has 10 to 20 times higher economic value than raw seaweed. Kappa carrageenan is used as a raw material of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food industry and other industries. Today, carrageenan was developed in the biomedical world as an antioxidant, anticoagulant, antiviral, anticancer and anti-inflammatory.

Poteran Island is the highest producer of seaweed in Sumenep Regency. There are two types of seaweed products are sold, which are sold wet (used as seed again) and sold dried (dried beforehand). Unfortunately, the survey conducted on the Madura Island showed there is no proper processing of seaweed in Poteran Island. The farmers just simply harvest the seaweed before the carrageenan content in maximum concentration. Moreover, direct sun light is often used by the famers to dry the wet seaweed.
