SIDI WEEK dated on September 10 - 11th 2016 along with the SIDI team officials and the committee, traveled to the island in order to see the location-related and to get some supportive data, in this case we visited Poteran’s island with several activities such as visiting and doing seminar at University of Wiraraja. We are doing discussion while dinner, visiting to the planting location of Moringa and Seaweed projects also to the estimated-location of the Moringa plant, discussion with the local village chief, as well as some traditionally Madura’s food such as Campor, Apen and Nasi Jagung.

At 10:30 pm the journey began with the first aim to the University of Wiraraja to conduct a seminar and discussion with lecturers and students of University of Wiraraja, but due to unforeseen bottlenecks that cause deterioration of the originally scheduled starting at 15:00 becomes 17:00. Nevertheless, the spirit of the students and lecturers who follow the activities of the consortium did not abate, it is evidenced by the spirit of

them to ask a lot of questions posed visible enthusiasm of the participants on this project. The journey continued with a discussion together while dinner and an overnight stay at the C1 Hotel in Sumenep. More than that, the next day the trip continued to campor eatery and other dishes typical of Madura, with beef broth plus bean sprouts along with rice cakes and other extras make this dishes has unique taste. Once done with breakfast and dishes, the team were welcomed as a visit to the village head of Talango with the leader of PPL farmer groups and farmer groups in home belongs to chief of Talango village, some questions also had asked by them, one of their question is about how’s the requirements to be able to participate and become a farmer groups of this Kelor cultivation, Mrs. Eka as a PPL farmer groups explained that so far there were five groups of farmers who have already had legal entities, and only farmer group with legal entities could involve themselves and become Moringa farmers, farmers also asked about counseling to plant Moringa based on international standard which it will be described later. Then, Prof. Gruenwald replied the question by said to them that to change farmers mindset need along one generation because a life of local people in Poteran still using traditional equipment to doing agriculture everyday so that is very difficult doing habit modern like industry factory activity. However, nothing is impossible all of things can do step by step and one of the way is doing generation from the young local people from a farmer family or usually called son of farmer to give advantage and positive impact for increase agriculture activity especially in Poteran Island.

The journey does not stop there, the team continued up to the location of Moringa cultivation and the location that estimated to build the Moringa’s plant. The fresh idea is obtained to increase the income of farmers as well as farmers Moringa also as a chili herbs farmers where each one of Moringa can be planted two seeds of chili herb by coiled the Moringa tree with harvesting time each month during the rainy season which is around the month of January to June. And it would also be highly advantageous to the farmers considering the sale of chili herbs per kilogram reached 83,000 / kg, another important thing that needs to be observed that the design placed of moringa tree so that the tree showed a more optimal production of the two plants, both chili herb and Moringa. Beside of the planting site of Moringa, our trip continued to the trail with a road width approximately 3 meters into the clearing point which is this location has estimated to be the location of moringa plant with an area of approximately 3 acres. From the size of that area, the plant layout must be designed as possible in order to reach the whole of the process. Remembering that the main requirement for this factory is water, a review was made to see the well location which is not far from the clearing point with a depth around 25 meter and the water condition was dirty so it needs more treatment in advance before it is applied to the plant. For electricity withdrawal Moringa plant’s needs are found and not too difficult because it was close between the power cord from the site, along with road conditions, the road width allows pick-ups can be passed to transport the Moringa as a raw material. The trip ended with a visit to the residence of the Mr. Asmuni, seaweed farmer which located next to the beach where near to seaweed cultivation while the team enjoying the sea breeze and the natural beauty of the blue and green.

Those things are a small part of the data that we get from SIDI week this year. Some things need to be re-examined after the acquisition of some of the data and description of the visit, overall the visit also provides valuable experience of how difficult to make one vision with different mind’s view and a different mindset to keep inline with the goal. Our works was not done yet, we still doing some research while we are back to the Surabaya and fix our data to become more feasible and complete.
